Venus Williams’s hopes of winning a first Australian Open
title at the age of 35 have been dashed today January 19, 2016 as she
lost her first round match to British number one, Johanna Konta 6-2.
Johanna Konta shakes Venus Williams
Venus who was named WTA comeback player of the year in 2015 struggled throughout the encounter as she could not get against her Australia-born opponent in the heat of Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday, however, and crashed out in 79 minutes.
Although, Williams exhibited signs of a super star, from 5-0 to 5-2 in the second set, but there was nothing she could do as 24-year-old Konta secured the upset when the former world number one netted a return.
Also, it was another upset as Rafael Nadal lost to Fernando Verdasco in five-set match at Rod Laver Arena.
According to the tournament’s official report, Verdasco prevailed 7-6(6) 4-6 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 in four hours and 41 minutes, condemning the 14-time major champion to his earliest Australian Open exit in 11 attempts and only the second opening-round loss in his Grand Slam career.
