This guy skipped work for 6 years and no one noticed… until he won an award

A Spanish company discovered an employee’s six-year absence… after trying to give him an award. Joaquin Garcia, 69, became eligible for an award based on his 20 years of service.

Garcia, whose job had been to supervise the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, said he didn’t want to report the lack of work, because he feared he would lose his job and be unable to find another one. Instead, he dedicated his time to reading philosophy.

Meanwhile, the water company thought Garcia was being supervised by local authorities, who thought the opposite, BBC reported.

This week a court fined Garcia €27,000 ($30,000), which is the equivalent of one year of his annual salary after taxes.

Garcia is trying to fight the fine, and he told the court he visited the office occasionally, but he didn’t keep regular business hours. He said he was bullied at work, because of his family’s socialist politics.
